Social Mobility Day - Why Stories Matter!

Today, 11th June, marks Social Mobility Day, a vital opportunity to reflect on how we can break down barriers to opportunity and ensure that a person’s background does not dictate their future. This year’s national theme is Stories Matter’ and at Going Forward into Employment (GFiE), we couldn’t agree more.

While statistics and data are essential for tracking progress, it is the individual human experiences that truly illustrate the impact of social mobility initiatives.

Our GFiE Pathways exist to open doors into the Civil Service for people who might otherwise find them closed. We provide candidates with the tools, confidence, and insight needed to navigate the recruitment process and thrive in their new careers.

To celebrate, we are sharing three powerful case studies from individuals who have recently transformed their career paths through the GFiE Masterclass Pathway.

The Power of Targeted Support

Highly capable candidates often find the Civil Service recruitment process difficult to navigate. Sometimes, all it takes is the right pathway to bridge the gap.

"I first heard about the GFiE Masterclass Pathway from a family friend. Before this opportunity, I had applied for multiple jobs in the Civil Service and reached the interview stage on a number of occasions, however, I could never pass that final hurdle, and I couldn’t see any way to improve on my efforts.

When I heard about the GFiE Pathway I jumped at the opportunity, imagining it as my last attempt before looking elsewhere. In two weeks, I was given the tools needed to give me that extra push across the line. Learning how to control my pace and how to hold myself when presenting answers to questions was a lesson I didn’t realise I needed until that moment. I believe I would have never achieved what I have done now without the lessons I learned through the GFiE Masterclass Pathway."

Realising Transferable Skills

Switching careers is daunting. People often already have the skills, but might just need a little help translating them for a brand new industry. Here is a story about how our Pathways help turn past experience into future success.

"I heard about the GFiE Pathway through word of mouth and thought it sounded great, but too good to be true. However, the atmosphere was really encouraging, and I began to realise I had many transferable skills and attributes.

I had a job discussion for two roles and secured an Executive Officer role in the Home Office. This was a blessing in disguise: the department I was placed in was Workforce Service Support (Recruitment). My team works directly with the Masterclass Pathway, so it was a nice feeling to still be a part of the course that allowed me to change my career path.

Since starting in July 2025, I have attended careers events, delivered sessions on strength questions at various Masterclass days, and hosted work experience for college students. Although there have been challenges along the way, my resilience and confidence have grown immensely."

Resilience Rewarded

When job hunting takes longer than expected, it's easy for great candidates to lose their confidence. GFiE works alongside local partners, such as Jobcentres, to look past the gaps and find dedicated people who are entirely capable, but simply lack the right entry point.

"In 2023, I was made redundant and spent almost two years actively seeking new employment. During this period, I was approached by my local Jobcentre and asked whether I would be interested in working in the Civil Service. I explained to my work coach that I had applied for Civil Service roles many times over the past decade, but had not been successful.

In March 2025, I was invited to attend a Civil Service masterclass, which proved to be a turning point. Following this, I successfully secured a role as a Casework Processing Officer within the Home Office.   Now, seven months into the role, I am pleased to say that I have settled in very well. I have built strong working relationships within my team, received several performance awards, and consistently perform to a high standard. Most importantly, I genuinely enjoy coming to work every day and feel proud to be part of the Civil Service."

Why These Stories Matter to Your Department

These three journeys represent exactly why GFiE does what it does, and why your department should get involved. They remind us that:

  • Potential is everywhere, but opportunity is not always visible: Targeted recruitment interventions can uncover incredible talent for your teams.
  • Rejection does not equal a lack of ability: Sometimes, highly capable candidates simply need to learn the specific language or culture of our recruitment process to shine.
  • Lived experiences enhance the Civil Service: Whether bringing the resilience learned from a long job hunt or the communication skills of a former teacher, diverse backgrounds make our teams stronger, more innovative, and more effective.

This Social Mobility Day, let's remember that every recruitment statistic is a person.

By sharing these journeys, we hope to inspire hiring managers across the Civil Service to rethink how they fill their vacancies. We invite you to partner with GFiE, tap into these dedicated talent pools, and discover the professionals waiting for their opportunity.

Because futures should be defined by potential, and each individual's story matters to the success of the Civil Service.
