Building the Bridge from Military Excellence to Civil Service Careers

In recognition of Armed Forces Day 2026, we look at how this day serves to demonstrate support and appreciation for the entire Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans, cadets, and their families

At Going Forward into Employment (GFiE), we value and celebrate the unique perspectives that veterans and their families bring to our workforce, acting as a vital link between military expertise and public service excellence. GFiE serves as the essential "bridge" for those transitioning into civilian roles. Over the last three years, the GFiE Life Chance pathway has achieved remarkable success, empowering over 180 veterans and military spouses/partners to begin rewarding careers within the Civil Service.

The Power of Experience

Military service instils a profound sense of leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability - all of these are key skills that are transferable and essential in the Civil Service. We view these attributes as the building blocks of a more representative and effective government, helping us to better serve the communities we represent.

GFiE pathways are designed to demystify the recruitment process and remove barriers that can often make civilian employment feel out of reach. By providing a streamlined and supported entry route, we ensure that the 'human story' of every candidate is heard and valued.

In March, we were proud to attend the Mission Motorsport National Transition Event at Silverstone. It was a privilege to meet so many veterans and family members who displayed the exact leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving skills we champion. Engaging with you face-to-face reinforces why our work as a bridge to Civil Service careers is so vital.

We also connect with the Armed Forces community  regularly through digital platforms and events.

Veterans and service leavers are able to view any vacancies GFiE has to offer through the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) who are the official resettlement service providers for the Armed Forces.

Military spouses & partners are able to view vacancies through Forces Families Jobs who dedicate their support to the military family.

We continue to work with a network of partners to share opportunities nationwide. If you are a veteran or military spouse looking for your next step, or an organisation looking to tap into this extraordinary talent pool, please reach out to us at GFIE@cabinetoffice.gov.uk.

Supporting Our Armed Forces Community

On this Armed Forces Day, we invite you to see the GFiE bridge in action. By integrating the talent and work ethic of the Armed Forces community into our teams, we strengthen our departments and foster an environment where diverse life experiences drive real impact.

Celebrate Armed Forces Day 2026 by attending local events or simply taking the time to connect with a veteran. Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for serving personnel, veterans and their families

GFiE Veteran & Military Spouse/Partner pathway

The GFiE life chance pathway for veterans & military spouses focuses on matching veterans and spouses with roles in the Civil Service.

We would like to extend our appreciation to all our civil service colleagues who continue to help support GFiE, whether through the employment opportunities you provide, or by supporting us within our networks and being allies and champions for our work.

Don’t forget - if you would like to discuss providing employment opportunities within your department to the Veteran community, or via one of the other GFiE Pathways you can find more information at Civil Service Careers GFiE Pathways page, or you can contact us at GFiE@cabinetoffice.gov.uk

Finally, GFiE thanks all who serve and have served. Your dedication is truly appreciated.
