Exploring the ‘Many Ways to Learn’

This week (Monday 18 - Sunday 24 May) marks Learning at Work Week (LAW).  This year's inspiring theme ‘Many ways to learn’  invites us to reflect on how we acquire new skills, adapt to changing environments, and grow as professionals.

Gone are the days when learning was confined strictly to a classroom desk or a formal training seminar. Today, learning is dynamic, continuous, and happens everywhere, especially right here in the workplace.

To truly understand the power of this theme, we don't need to look any further than the emerging talent joining our teams.

This year, the Civil Service has proudly expanded its industry placement programs, bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world impact. We are seeing first hand how hands-on experience is one of the most powerful learning tools available.

I am a T-level student currently completing a nine week work placement within GFiE as I move towards the final stages of my course.

Over the past few weeks, I have picked up and expanded several key skills within the workplace, including networking, time-management, organisation, confidence.   Although I feel that I already have an excellent set of skills, there is always more to learn.

Learning at Work Week supports my journey towards self-improvement, helping me to address skill gaps and discover ways to bridge them. I find taking part in this event is very beneficial; because it is interactive and engaging. I feel motivated and encouraged to continue developing myself as for me, this hands-on method is often more effective than other traditional training courses, as it maintains my attention and challenges my critical thinking skills.

How LAW Week and GFiE Align:

The Cabinet Office Going Forward into Employment (GFiE) recruitment pathway provides opportunities for a wide range of people, including Veterans/ Military Spouses, People with Convictions, Care leavers, Carers and Autistic individuals. Our mission is to support those who face barriers to employment, and to increase diversity and inclusion within the Civil Service.  There are over 20 pathways active across the civil service that actively break down barriers to recruitment.

Learning at Work Week (LAW) shares a similar spirit by opening opportunities within the workplace. While GFiE offers support to those who have barriers to employment, LAW Week provides the tools for employees to build personal skills and thrive once they are in.

By embracing this event, organisations can help a diverse range of people develop their character and professional abilities which could lead to greater opportunities beyond their initial GFiE.

A Lifelong Journey

As Learning at Work Week 2026 continues, let this be a reminder that we are all on a continuous learning journey.

Whether you are a student on your first placement, a mentor guiding new talent, or a senior leader with decades of experience, there are always new methods, new perspectives to gain, and many ways to learn.
